 Search engine optimization is dynamic, which means that best practices can change in the blink of an eye. Since this field of digital marketing is relatively new, Google is still figuring out how to deliver the best search results for any given query. On average, Google performs small updates to the algorithm around 500-600 times a year. The best thing that SEO strategists can do is learn from past impactful Google Algorithm updates and predict the next thing coming.

Google Releases Mobile-First Index: Is Your Site Ready?

More than ever, consumers have information readily available at their fingerprints 24/7. With the rise of mobile devices, tablets, and voice-assistants, desktop use is gradually becoming a thing of the past. According to Stone Temple, mobile use in the U.S. surpassed desktop use by an astounding 63 percent in 2017.

Google is taking notice of this trend. As of July 2018, they announced that they will now prioritize the mobile versions of websites over desktop versions in their rankings with a “Mobile-First Index.” If your website is not mobile-friendly, it could now potentially be outranked by competitor sites, or be left out of Google’s new algorithm completely.
